Here is a photo of my first watercolor painting. I thought it was pretty good...loved the colors! That was appropriate at the time and it was many years before any of my wonderful professional instructors even thought of mentioning what should have been obvious to them.
Here is the same picture, many years later when I decided to find out how I might do it better.
Now we see three definite values, attention to lighting, many textures, secondary triad color scheme, curving lines predominating, main object taking up most of the room in the rectangle, restful horizontal direction.
Overall, much more interesting !
