Make it easy on yourself and begin the easy way by making several - at least ten - thumbnail value sketches.  Use a paper bag from the grocery store and open it up so you can use the inside where there is no printing.  Cut or tear it into pieces about 4" x 6".
Get a soft pencil like you used to use in elementary school and make a sketch of something you see right in your own home. The sketch should contain three objects of different sizes.
After you have decided where to place the objects in the sketch, use your pencil using strong middle and light pressure to create dark, middle and light value and "color" in the shapes.

Make It Easy !
When you teach yourself to think in terms of values and shapes you will be miles ahead toward learning how much fun painting (and drawing) can be.  And that is the start to creating great art !
