Paintings have only three possible directions:
Vertical, Horizontal or Slanting.
For best effect only one direction should predominate. To see what direction there is in a painting, squint your eyes, look and ask the question: "What is the prodominant direction of this image?"
Verticals imply stregth, dominance, stability.
Horizontals imply calm, repose, quiet, lack of action, even death.
Slanting, or diagonal, direction implies activity and movement.
Moving things get more attention than static things.
You may use all directions but only one should predominate.
